Overview

We’re incredibly excited to share an update on one of our most demanding and prestigious projects: providing the complete access solution for a major solar panel installation at a beautiful, historic Salisbury Church. This was a challenging job that required a deep understanding of heritage preservation and complex rigging.

Our Solution

The Challenge: Supporting Modern Work on Ancient Stone

For a project this sensitive, the client needed a scaffolding partner they could trust implicitly — and that partner was Up Top Scaffolding. Drawing on our extensive experience delivering specialist scaffolding services, we were tasked with overcoming a number of complex challenges where precision and expertise were critical.

  • Heritage Protection: The entire system had to be non-invasive, ensuring zero stress or damage to the delicate stonework, ancient walls, and irreplaceable internal features. This required specialist knowledge of load-bearing calculations for historic structures.
  • Dual Access Needs: Robust external access was required for roofers, alongside safe internal access for technicians to run cabling and inspect the structure — a level of complexity only achievable through years of varied experience.
  • Compliance & Safety: Operating within a live, historic site meant adhering to the strictest safety protocols and heritage guidelines, ensuring full compliance and complete peace of mind for the church committee.

The Solution: A Bespoke Scaffold Masterpiece – Inside and Out

The success of the solar installation hinged entirely on our ability to deliver a safe, stable, and highly customised scaffolding solution.

The External Rig: Safe, Stable, and Non-Invasive

We erected a comprehensive perimeter scaffold system, custom-designed to respect the church’s footprint and historic fabric.

  • Our 15+ years of experience working on listed buildings informed the use of specialist anchoring and bracing techniques, designed for minimal-to-zero structural penetration.
  • A wide, stable working deck was provided at height, enabling precise and secure installation of the solar panels while optimising installer workflow.

The Internal Rig: Access Without Disruption

The most delicate aspect of the project was the internal scaffolding, required for accessing roof voids and running cables.

  • We engineered a multi-tier, self-supporting internal scaffold, with precise weight distribution calculations to prevent any lateral force on the historic walls.
  • All components positioned near historic features were padded and installed with millimetre accuracy, demonstrating our commitment to protecting priceless heritage assets.

Up Top Scaffolding Insight:
“Working on Salisbury Church wasn’t about speed; it was about precision. Our team spent days planning the structural calculations to ensure the scaffold was fully self-supporting and protective of the priceless heritage beneath it. This level of planning is only possible through extensive experience — and it’s what sets our service apart.”
